What is Answer Engine Optimization?
Also known as: AEO
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of optimizing content to win direct-answer placements in search engines — featured snippets, knowledge panels, "people also ask" boxes, and Google AI Overviews. Where traditional SEO targets the ten blue links and Generative Engine Optimization targets AI-generated answers in chat interfaces, AEO targets the structured-answer real estate inside the search results page itself.
AEO vs. SEO vs. GEO
These three disciplines overlap but optimize for different user experiences. Traditional SEO wins clicks on organic blue links. AEO wins the snippet/featured-answer real estate above (or instead of) those links. GEO wins citation inside AI-generated answers in chat interfaces (ChatGPT, Perplexity, etc.) and increasingly inside Google AI Overviews.
A modern content program runs all three concurrently. Page hygiene and backlinks feed all three; schema markup is heavier in AEO and GEO; explicit "what is X / how do I X" content structures are heaviest in AEO.
Core AEO tactics
Effective AEO content has a few structural features: (1) the answer to the implied question appears in the first 40-60 words of the page; (2) the page uses semantic HTML — H2 questions, ordered/unordered lists where the structure matches the answer, tables for comparison data; (3) FAQPage and HowTo schema markup is present and validates; (4) the page is part of a topic cluster so internal links signal expertise to search engines; (5) the page targets a specific query intent (informational, comparative, transactional) rather than spreading thin.
AEO is most effective for informational queries — "what is", "how does", "why is", "when should". It is less effective for navigational and transactional queries where users are already past the discovery stage.
AEO measurement
Core AEO metrics are featured snippet ownership rate (what fraction of target queries does your content occupy the snippet), AI Overview citation share (a 2024-2026 addition as Google AI Overviews matured), zero-click impressions (Search Console), and click-through rate on snippet-positioned results.
Search Console’s "appearance" filter, third-party tools like Ahrefs and SEMrush, and AI-specific tools like Profound provide the relevant data.
